Tree from Onida to be centerpiece of 2023 Christmas at the Capitol Display in Pierre

This year’s featured tree for the South Dakota Christmas at the Capitol display is a 40 foot Blue Spruce that was harvested near Onida this morning (Nov. 6, 2023).

State Forest Health Specialist John Ball oversaw the process.

If you’re thinking of harvesting your own Christmas Tree this year, Ball’s top recommendation is a Frazier Fir. He says they’re known for staying fresh for a long period of time, and for having soft needles and a great pine aroma.
