HURON – Northwestern continues to make its claim as the dominant program in the entire history of South Dakota Class B volleyball. The Wildcats won their 12th championship Saturday with a four-set win over Warner in the title match of the state tournament at Huron Arena. Those titles have all been in the last 22 seasons, dating back to the Wildcats’ first championship in 1999.
Championship
Northwestern 3, Warner 1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18)
Sydney Schell had 21 kills, 1 solo block and 20 digs for the Wildcats (29-1). Hannah Schentzel added 11 kills and 5 aces. Jennifer Aman had a season-high 28 kills for the Monarchs (24-2). Warner was seeking a second championship in three seasons, having beaten Northwestern in the championship match in 2018.
3rd Place
Chester Area 3, Colman-Egan 2 (13-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12)
Breckyn Ewoldt led the Flyers (23-3) with 22 kills. Chester Area matched its third-place finish from 2017, two years after winning its only championship. Olivia Baumberger had 19 kills, 3 solo blocks and 14 digs for the Hawks (25-5), who finished fourth in their initial state tournament appearance.
5th Place
Faulkton Area 3, Bridgewater-Emery 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-18)
Peyton Melius had 20 kills, an ace and ½ block for the Trojans (20-6), a 2019 finalist. Isabel Aesoph played another excellent match with 13 kills, an ace, 19 assists and 21 digs. Julia Weber led the Huskies (22-4) with 10 kills. Bridgewater-Emery was in its second straight state tournament, marking the first two appearances in the program’s history.
7th Place
Hitchcock-Tulare 3, Corsica-Stickney 1 (25-13, 25-15, 24-26, 28-26)
Dannyn Peterson and Kaitlyn Schroeder each had 12 kills for the Patriots (19-6). This was Hitchcock-Tulare’s first state tournament appearance, although Hitchcock made the 1994 tourney. For the Jaguars (19-6), Raven Barse had 13 kills to end the combined school’s first state appearance. Corsica made the 1992 tournament.
