Max Hawk, one of the greats of South Dakota high school football coaching, died last Friday in Arizona at age 87.
Hawk led Yankton to 10 state championships and 232 wins in 30 seasons as the Bucks’ head coach from 1965 to 1994. His final game was an incredible 11AA championship game in 1994 where the Bucks stampeded back from a 16-point deficit in the last 10 minutes to beat Rapid City Stevens in double overtime, 26-23.
His coaching career began in Scotland in 1957. At the time of his retirement, he was the winningest coach in state history with 284 wins. Hawk was an alum of Wessington Springs High School and Northern State University.
