SIOUX FALLS – A buzzer-beating upset by Dell Rapids began an exciting day of first round games of the Boys Class A State Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Seeds two through four fought through to reach the semifinals.
Dell Rapids 53, Vermillion 52
Landon Ruesink hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Quarriers to the upset of the top-seeded and previously unbeaten Tanagers.
With six seconds left, Vermillion’s Jakob Doney made a steal and layup to give the Tanagers a 52-50 lead. Then, Colin Rentz sent a bounce pass from the top of the key to Doney on the right wing for the winner for Dell Rapids (17-6), who lost to Vermillion by two in the regular season. That was Vermillion’s only win that wasn’t by at least 11 points.
Connor Rentz and Brayden Pankonen each scored 15 for Dell Rapids. Colin Rentz scored 10 with 10 rebounds.
Dillon Gestring scored 16 with eight rebounds for Vermillion (22-1).
Sioux Falls Christian 58, St. Thomas More 47
Sioux Falls Christian had leads of 13 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second quarter and controlled St. Thomas More.
Tyler Prins led the Chargers (18-5) off the bench with 20 and Xavier Van Beek had 18 as Sioux Falls Christian shot 50 percent from the floor and held STM to only 34 percent.
Ryan Wojcik scored 17 for the Cavaliers (19-4).
Dakota Valley 65, Winner 58
Winner cut a 20-point lead to one, but the Warriors’ rally fell short Thursday in a Dakota Valley win.
Dakota Valley (22-2) used a 25-0 run in the first half to take an 18-point halftime lead before the Warriors rallied. Isaac Bruns led the Panthers with 31 points on 13-of-21 shooting with three three-pointers. Paul Bruns had a monstrous game in the post with 22 points and 21 rebounds.
Brady Fritz had six threes and 28 points for Winner (20-3).
Sioux Valley 53, Chamberlain 44
Sioux Valley had an 18-0 third quarter run to pull away from Chamberlain.
Chamberlain led 27-24 early in the third quarter before the Cossacks held the Cubs scoreless for five and a half minutes.
Kelton Vincent led Sioux Valley (22-1) with 16 points and Oliver Vincent had 15.
Drayton Priebe scored 13 to lead Chamberlain (17-5). Cameron Caldwell scored 12 on four three-pointers.
