FORT MYERS, FL – Despite three home runs and a good start from Kenta Maeda, the Minnesota Twins lost a spring training game to the Atlanta Braves Friday 7-6 at Hammond Stadium.
Maeda, in his final start before pitching in Thursday’s regular-season opener, struck out four and allowed three hits in four scoreless innings. J.A. Happ allowed six runs and 10 hits in three and two-thirds innings.
Ryan Garlick hit his fifth Grapefruit League home run for Minnesota (10-13-1). Miguel Sanó and David Banuelos also homered for the Twins.
The Twins played only hours after learning of the death of bench coach Mike Bell due to kidney cancer. Bell’s family requested that the game be played as scheduled.
Minnesota will host Tampa Bay Saturday at Hammond Stadium.
