PIERRE – Concerns over COVID-19 have induced the South Dakota High School Activities Association to make changes to the State Track & Field Championships, scheduled for the Black Hills on May 28 and 29.
Each classification will have competition at their own individual sites. Class AA will compete at Woodle Field in Sturgis. Class A will be at Lyle Hare Stadium at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Class B events will be at O’Harra Memorial Stadium at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City.
Additionally, the schedule has been modified to mitigate the risk of the virus.
The SDHSAA is requesting that fans wear masks and practice social distancing. Teams and school personnel will be asked to space out within facilities.
In a statement, SDHSAA Assistant Executive Director Dr. John Krogstrand said, “This change is being done after consulting with our Site Hosts, Coaches and Administrators from across the state to formulate a meet that will allow us to hold a full, championship competition. Our hope is these changes, both in terms of sites and schedule, will allow us to host a successful State Meet while also maintaining social distancing guidelines and health precautions.”
