SIOUX FALLS – 15th-ranked West Virginia overcame poor shooting to hold off South Dakota State Wednesday 79-71 in the Jackrabbits’ men’s basketball season opener at the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic at the Sanford Pentagon.
Miles McBride led the Mountaineers with 21 points. Sean McNeil scored 16. Taz Sherman had 14 off the WVU bench, with four three-pointers.
Douglas Wilson led four in double figures for SDSU with 17. Noah Friedel scored 16 with Baylor Schierman adding 13, and both sank three three-pointers. Matt Detlinger hit 10 points.
The Jacks led for portions of the first half before West Virginia gained the lead with just over six minutes left in the half and never trailed again, leading by as much as 11 before SDSU cut the lead to as little as four late.
On Thanksgiving, the Jackrabbits will play Utah State at 6:30 PM.
