MINNEAPOLIS – Eddie Rosario, the Twins’ starting left fielder for the last six seasons, was placed on waivers, not claimed and became a free agent after not being tendered a new contract.
Rosario, who became a fan favorite, hit .257 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with 13 homers and 57 RBI. But the Twins couldn’t justify paying him for a new deal, which could have been as much as nearly 13 million dollars. First-round draft picks Alex Kiriloff and Trevor Larnach may be ready to assume the left field job. Kiriloff made his major league debut during the Twins’ Wild Card Series loss to Houston. Larnach has not yet appeared in the majors. Other possibilities are Jake Cave, Lamont Wade Jr. and Brent Rooker.
Reliever Matt Wisler was also non-tendered, although Twins’ President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey said that he could return. Wisler, who specializes in a very effective slider, was used in a variety of bullpen roles in 2020, pitching to a 1.07 ERA in 25 1/3 innings.
There will definitely be another spot to fill in the Twins’ bullpen, as the New York Mets officially signed Trevor May to a two-year deal on Wednesday. May had a win and two saves in 2020.
