BROOKINGS – After missing the previous four games with an injury, Douglas Wilson scored 22 points Friday as South Dakota State began Summit League play by defeating Western Illinois 83-77 at Frost Arena.
Wilson, who had not played since December 4, was 9-of-14 shooting. Luke Appel tied his career-high with 16 points and Baylor Scheierman also scored 16. SDSU (7-3, 1-0) trailed 7-0 early before having a 21-2 run that led to a 41-28 halftime lead for the Jacks. South Dakota State later led by as much as 22 before the Leathernecks cut the lead to two with just under two minutes left.

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State women’s basketball head coach Aaron Johnston earned his 500th career win Friday as the Jackrabbits opened Summit League play with a 71-61 win over Western Illinois at Frost Arena.
Myah Selland led SDSU (8-2, 1-0) with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Paiton Burckhard scored 13 and Tylee Irwin scored 12. SDSU scored 25 points off turnovers.
The Jackrabbits will again host Western Illinois on Saturday.
