SIOUX FALLS – Top-seed South Dakota State women’s basketball suffered a stunning 52-40 loss to Omaha Saturday in the first round of the Summit League Basketball Championship at the Sanford Pentagon. The Mavericks, who lost to SDSU by 59 points in the first round in 2020, became the first eighth seed to defeat a top seed in the history of the Summit League women’s tournament.
South Dakota State (21-3), who had won 18 straight games and went unbeaten in conference play at 14-0, was led by the 10 points each of Paiton Burckhard and Tyler Irwin.

Sully Buttes alum Chloe Lamb scored 22 points Saturday to lead South Dakota women’s basketball to a first-round Summit League tournament win over Oral Roberts, 89-66.
Lamb, who set the Coyote program record by playing in her 124th consecutive game, hit four three-pointers. Hannah Sjerven and Liv Korngable each scored 19 for USD (17-5).
The second-seeded Coyotes will play in the semifinal Monday against the winner of Sunday’s first-round game between North Dakota and Denver.

With 53 percent shooting, South Dakota men’s basketball powered past Omaha Saturday 84-71 in first-round play of the Summit League Men’s Championship.
Douglas Wilson scored 25 for the Jacks (16-6). Baylor Scheierman scored 18 points with four three-pointers.
SDSU will play Monday in the semifinal against the winner of Sunday’s game between Oral Roberts and North Dakota.

Second-seed South Dakota men’s basketball breezed past Western Illinois Saturday 86-69 in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.
Stanley Umude led the Coyotes (14-10) with 24 points. Xavier Fuller scored 20 and Tasos Kamateros scored 17.
On Monday, South Dakota will meet the winner of Sunday’s North Dakota State-Kansas City game in the semifinals.
