The South Dakota Discovery Center’s monthly Discovery on Tap event tonight (Feb. 17, 2023) features the science behind modern materials and the craft of making swords.
Dr. Michael West, the Department Head of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Metallurgical Engineering Department, will share the information at 5:30pm CT at the St. Charles Lounge (207 E Capitol Avenue) in Pierre. this Friday for the South Dakota Discovery Center’s Discovery on Tap program, Friday, Feb. 17, 2023.
West spends his time researching the efforts to incorporate art and science in the crafting of modern materials through blacksmithing and other methods throughout history into the present-day. Central to his discussion and presentation is an award-winning sword made by School of Mines students and the discoveries being made by them in his Department.
Participants get to learn about engineering practices that still impact how items are produced in modern times, then bundle up for a blacksmithing display with a portable forge (depending on weather), and make your own object from polymer clay.
There is no charge to attend.
