The Pierre City Commission has approved requesting bids for the construction of a wash bay for large equipment.
Current plans place the drive-through wash bay adjacent to the city’s street department shop on Dakota Avenue. The bay would be used to clean plows, graders, side dumps and other large city-owned equipment.
Utilities Director Brad Palmer says the bay is about more than aesthetics. He says keeping the equipment clean is a maintenance issue and extends the life of the equipment by removing salt and other corrosive materials from their exterior.
Currently, Pierre employees wash and store the equipment inside the shop, which Palmer says causes high moisture issues such as corrosion.
