INDIANAPOLIS – A big change will come to high school basketball next season.
The National Federation of High Schools announced Monday that its Board of Directors approved its rules committee’s recommendation to change foul administration and free throw procedures.
Starting next season, teams will reach the bonus when the opponent commits its fifth team foul in each quarter and team fouls will reset with each quarter. Also, when a team is in the bonus, every common foul will result in two free throws, eliminating the one-and-one. This is the same procedure used in women’s college basketball.
In a press release, the NFHS said that the rationale for making this change was to reduce the frequency of rebounding situations that could result in injury and to improve the overall game flow.
Teams previously had the one-and-one bonus with the opponent’s seventh team foul in each half and the two-shot bonus with the 10th team foul.
In nearly all instances, the SDHSAA adheres to NFHS rules.
