SIOUX FALLS – On the first day of the 2023 SDHSAA State Track And Field Championships at Howard Wood Field, Ipswich moved to the girls class B team lead. The Tigers had 24 ½ points through Thursday, nine and a half more than Deubrook Area’s 15. Potter County stood third with 14. Menno held a 10-point lead over Ipswich in Class B boys.
Spearfish led AA girls by one-half point over O’Gorman, with the Knights leading Brandon Valley by four points among AA boys.
Both Sioux Falls Christian teams, as expected, the Class A team leaders, thanks to relay teams that set records.
Among Central South Dakota competitors, one of Thursday’s highlights was Pierre’s Reese Terwilliger winning the AA girls shot put championship. Terwilliger extended her own school record with her best put of 44 feet, one inch.
Kadoka Area’s Kacie Eisenbraun won the Class B girls pole vault championship, clearing 10 feet.
Lee Reiser of Platte-Geddes threw 177 feet, five inches to win the Class A boys discus title. Canyon Burkhard of Chamberlain was second.
Gracie Lange of Ipswich cleared five feet, two inches to win the Class B girls high jump state championship. Kamaria Krogman of White River was second with a jump of five feet.
Lincoln Koeh of Kadoka Area won the Class B boys discus championship at 152 feet, four inches. The Kougars’ Reece Ohrtman finished fifth.
Piper Hanson of Burke and Stevie Wittler of Sully Buttes both advanced to Saturday’s final of the Class B girls 100 meter hurdles.
Three boys from the area qualified for the final of the Class B boys 110 meter hurdles, Lyman’s Rory McManus, Carter Geditz of Ipswich and Samuel Hand of Philip.
Bella Williams of Kadoka Area had the fourth-best preliminary time and qualified for the final in the Class B girls 100 meters. Shay Kraft of Timber Lake missed qualifying by only .08.
Aiden Barfuss of Winner advanced to the final of the Class A boys 100 meters. Kade Stukel, the favorite in the Class B boys 100, advanced to the finals with the top qualifying time of 10.95.
In the girls 4×100 relay prelims, Miller advanced to the Class A final. Burke made the final in Class B. Platte-Geddes’ boys advanced to the Class A final. Gregory had the top qualifying time in Class B with 44.21 seconds, .04 ahead of Ipswich. Faith also advanced in eighth, just edging out Timber Lake.
Meet records were set in two 4×800 relay finals. Brandon Valley established a new girls AA record with 9:07.03 and Sioux Falls Christian shattered the boys Class A record with 7:54.51. That is 11 seconds better than the time of Madison in 1986, 8:05.78. SFC’s time was still six seconds short of the overall boys 4×800 state meet record.
Four meet records were set in sprint medley relay finals, including girls wins by O’Gorman in AA, Sioux Falls Christian in Class A and Colman-Egan in Class B and by the Sioux Falls Christian boys in Class A.
