PIERRE – Mitchell had won state championships in many sports, but never in girls golf – until Tuesday.
The Kernels held off Aberdeen Central to win the SDHSAA AA Girls Golf Championship at Hillsview Golf Course. Mitchell shot 40-over 616 for 36 holes, three strokes better than Aberdeen Central. Rapid City Stevens finished third.
Mitchell Huron has its first girls golf individual state champions. The Tigers’ Bryn Huber tied Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink at one-over 145, then won the title in a one-hole playoff. Huber had one of two sub-par rounds on Tuesday with a 70.
Pierre finished eighth with 703. Best individually for the Governors was Hadley Hart, who shot 162 to tie for 24th.
