PIERRE – The South Dakota High School Activities Association is set to receive help in expanding and managing corporate partnerships.
In its meeting Tuesday, the SDHSAA Board of Directors approved a 10-year contract with Teall Properties Group, a North Carolina firm that specializes in helping state high athletic governing bodies attract corporate partners.
Currently, SDHSAA’s corporate sponsors bring in around $560,000 annually to help toward paying catastrophic insurance policies for schools and to pay rent and fees for some state tournament venues.
Also, the board approved a new rule governing ejections of fans.
If a spectator is ejected for a contest, then that fan also cannot attend the next contest in that same sport. A second ejection would result in a suspension of four contests. A third in one season would result in banishment for the rest of that season.
And, the board approved a $500 fine for schools that employ coaches who have not taken required courses.
Courses include Fundamentals of Coaching and Understanding Copyright. Each June 1, a course in Concussion in Sports and Heat Illness Prevention must be renewed. Every two years, courses in First Aid, Health and Safety and a Collapsed Athlete must be renewed. A Cheer and Dance course must be renewed every four years.
Employing coaches who have not taken proper courses can put a school at risk of a lawsuit in case of an accident or serious injury.
