Being a full-time firefighter isn’t an option for many adults, but being a volunteer firefighter for their local fire department is something current volunteers hope more people will consider.
Pierre Fire Department Deputy Chief Sean Kruger says the first year or two tend to require the most commitment.
Kruger says completing the training opens up the door to what you want to do as a firefighter.
Kruger says they understand that not everyone can respond to every call.
Kruger recommends talking with your employer and your loved ones at home about your interest in becoming a volunteer firefighter because their support is critical. As a way to begin to facilitate those conversations, the Pierre and Fort Pierre volunteer fire departments are holding a joint recruitment event later this month (Nov. 12, 2023, from 6-9pm) at Fire Station 1 in Pierre (215 W. Dakota Avenue).
Attending the informational event does not obligate anyone to join either department.
