RAPID CITY – Top two seeds Warner and Chester Area won with ease, with sixth seed Castlewood becoming the only lower seed to win Thursday in the first round of the SDHSAA Class B State Volleyball Tournament at the Summit Arena at the Monument.
Warner def. Gayville-Volin, 25-23, 25-9, 25-9
The Monarchs (38-0) survived a close first set to remain unbeaten. Kyleigh Schopp had 13 kills. Lauren Marcuson had nine kills, three aces and 16 digs. Courtney Bjorgaard had 19 digs and Haleigh Holt added 10. Ava Nilsson recorded 31 assists.
Maia Achen had 12 kills for Gayville-Volin (21-12) in the Raiders’ state volleyball debut. Keeley Larson had 15 assists.
Burke def. Wolsey-Wessington, 25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 23-25, 15-11
Burke (32-4) survived a Wolsey-Wessington comeback to win for the 25th time in 26 matches and avenge a third-place state loss in 2022. Kailee Frank had 20 kills, three aces and 18 digs for the Cougars. Emmie Hausmann had 17 kills, three aces and 11 digs. Paige Bull scored 14 kills and six blocks.
For Wolsey-Wessington (29-5), Kailynn Dorris had 21 kills and seven digs. Samara Clemente had 14 kills and four and a half blocks.
Chester Area def. Faulkton Area, 25-15, 25-10, 25-14
Castlewood def. Colman-Egan, 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23
Presley Knecht (24) and Emerson Carter (23) combined for 47 of the Warriors’ 54 kills as Castlewood (22-8) became the only lower seed to win in the Class B first round. Carter also had seven blocks.
Brynlee Landis and Daniela Lee each had 15 kills for Colman-Egan (28-6).
